Historical Development of Turkey Earthquake Zones Maps and Regulations

The first law covering efforts to reduce earthquake damage was enacted on 22 July 1944 under the name of “Law on Measures to be Taken Before and After Earthquakes”. In accordance with this law numbered 4623, for the first time in our country, a “Map of Shake Zones” and a parallel “Earthquake Regulation” were prepared by the Ministries of Public Works and National Education. Due to the developments in engineering seismology and the increase in tectonic and seismotectonic findings and earthquake records, Earthquake Zone Maps (1945, 1947, 1963, 1972 and 1996) and Regulations on Structures to be Constructed in Disaster Areas (1940, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1961, 1968, 1975) , 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2007) has been amended several times.

The goal of the project; To compile information on Earthquake Zone Maps and Regulations on Structures to be Built in Disaster Zones, which came into force after being approved by the decision of the Council of Ministers on different dates, some of which are almost nonexistent, and to compile information on the basis on which the maps were made, and the Earthquake Zone Maps to be made and Structures to be Constructed in Disaster Zones. It is to prepare a reference source for those who will prepare the Regulations.
